Big Me: MC Skills for Improv and Comedy
Presented by Matt Powell of Locomotive (Wellington/Te Whanganui-a-Tara) as part of the Big Fork Comedy Festival 2025.

Have you ever seen someone hosting a show and thought, damn, they really know what they're doing? And then tried to do the same thing and bombed? That's because the skills that make someone a good MC are intensely personal and intrinsic to each individual. The good news is, there's a way to unlock these skills for yourself, and it's all right here in this workshop. You'll meet your MC persona and learn key skills and behaviours to win over an audience and look after performers.

Workshop Length: 3 hours
Recommended experience level: No previous experience required
Participants need to know: There may be some homework beforehand in the form of a short quiz.

Meet Matt Powell (he/him)
Matt has been performing, directing, and teaching improv for over 25 years in New Zealand, Australia, and around the world. He once MCed a show so well that the mayor added him as a friend on Facebook.
